As an Ozaki he descended from a very old and important family who for year’s carried on the profession of the village Doctor. His father and his mother were very strict on the importance of their family name, and attempted to mold him into a perfect Ozaki heir. But that only proceeded to anger him, and instead he became rebellious and searched to do more for humanity then just be another Doctor Ozaki.

He would end up going to a University to obtain his Ph.D. in Medicine. During this time he worked at an antiques shop in Tokyo and that’s when he met his future wife Kyoko. She was the daughter of the owner of the shop, and knew that he was studying to be a doctor and that his family already owned their own hospital. Toshio exclaims that he can’t really remember much about their relationship, eventually they started dating and of course one day they chose to marry.

Shortly after graduating he was hired to work at a University Hospital, where he aimed to become a well-known and famous doctor. But at the age of 29 his father dies of pancreatic cancer, and he chooses to move back to the village. Kyoko does not follow him, instead getting her own place in the closest city and opening up a Fashion Boutique. From here on not much is really known about his history, most likely he just fell into the village routine like everybody else. He is highly respected by the villagers, and he generally show’s a lot of care towards them.

We see Toshio in the manga at the age of 32 as he studies the strange death’s that begin occurring around the village. At first most of the deaths were of the elderly and he brushed it off, thinking it must have been the heat and their age. But when a young high school student, Megumi, dies; things change and he start’s to realize something is seriously wrong here. Originally he diagnosed Megumi with Anemia, which shouldn’t have killed her, especially so quickly. So then he start’s warning his staff and his closest friend Seishin about his theory of a new disease, a plague even.

But no matter how many test’s he performed, nothing seemed to help the situation. He couldn’t figure it out until a confused and lost Natsuno ran into him in front of his hospital, and asked him “Do you think Megumi-san could still be alive?” which he laughed off, mocking him with words of zombies and vampires. But as soon as he said the word, he realized that it just might be vampires.

However; Toshio was a Doctor, a scientist, he would need to see proof with his own eyes. So one night, accompanied by Seishin, he stayed up for two day’s straight, guarding the bedside of a patient with similar symptoms to Megumi. On the second night they both saw her, a woman, floating up to the second window…a woman that Toshio knew was dead, Nao. She could not harm them though, basically because Shiki (vampires) could not enter a residence without being invited first. And Toshio made it clear, yelling outside his window that she and her kind where not welcome and to go to hell.

This was a victory for him; his patient started getting healthy and vibrant, and even started remembering the night she was attacked, the spell set on her wearing off. But just when he thought everything would turn out fine, they were attacked. Not just by one shiki this time, but all of them, this including Tatsumi. And unlike the Shiki, a Jinrou like Tatsumi was able to come during the day, and with this invitation gained access to the clinic. Toshio tried to fight him off but failed, getting his ass kicked and having to watch as he lifted the old woman up and jumped out the window, delivering her to her daughter in law and the other Shiki. She died in minutes. This was a turning point for Ozaki, where his focus was less on medicine, and more on extermination.

Such began the hunt for the Shiki, and he sought out a newly risen for concentrated experiments, often digging up graves to see if they would come back to life. Earlier during the period of keeping watch, Kyoko had arrived in Sotoba and taken up residence in the Ozaki household. And while he was busy searching through graves, Tatsumi took the opportunity to attack his wife. He never even realized until one day he got a call from his mother, telling him Kyoko had passed out.

He would take Kyoko to the hospital, but he already knew it was too late, and that there was nothing he could do for her. So, he let Tatsumi kill her, even watching outside the window as he left the room she was staying in. And he got to work, preserving the body with ice so that she still looked alive. And after nearly a week of waiting, panicking, going insane from thinking he was keeping a corpse in the hospital…she arose. She had become a Shiki, and Toshio knew it. So he tied her down, and started his experiments.

With the information he obtained, he killed her and then started his plans to destroy all the shiki. First he needed to know how many people have died, so he went to the census building, only to find it completely run by Shiki. That night would also become his first encounter with Chizuru, a female vampire that preyed on young men who she took a fancy too. She was one of the first vampire’s to start this mess, a Kirishiki. And she promised him that she would come and attack him some night.

But he wasn’t so dumb as to go down without a fight. The first night she came he countered her with religious symbols, creating a barrier around him. The second night though, she was prepared, but so was he. Sometime after his meeting with Chizuru, Natsuno (who had been turned into a Jinrou) visited him again, and they began to plan the Shiki’s total Annihilation. Part of this plan involved Natsuno biting Toshio, commanding him not to listen to Chizuru, and therefore saving his free will after Chizuru eventually got to him. That night he had fretful dreams, an IV stuck in his arm giving himself a full blood transfusion, but even then he was weak from the Anemia that follows being drained by a Shiki.

Yet he knew he had to go on, because the next night would be incredibly important to him, and for the sake of Humanity. That morning he burned all of his patient files, sending his mother in a panic but really there was no point in keeping these names around. Those who had died would never come back, and those that did where now the enemy. When Night fell Chizuru came to see him once more, making sure he had followed through with her demands and gotten rid of the evidence and rewrote the case reports.

She had no idea she had just fallen into his trap. With a hidden amount of charm and cleverness he convinced the vampire to come out with him and experience what is was like to be human again. A fall festival was going on, and one of the things he found through experimentations was the deep uncontrollable fear expressed when near a religious item. At first he kept her at distance from the main festival area like he promised, and acted his part brilliantly as the kind gentlemen working to convince the villagers she was just as human and normal as the rest of them. But he knew she was interested, and played on that interest until she decided to go nearer and nearer to the main area. And then when they were near enough he sprung his trap, asking another villager to help her to the shack that was further in, playing that her fear was in fact just a side effect of her illness. She cried and hollered and then one of the villagers takes her by the wrist and feeling her cold skin jumps back. Chizuru demands to leave this place and all Toshio does is grin and she realizes her own stupidity. She falls to the ground, paralyzed with fear and he asks for Megumi’s father to check her pulse. He confirms she has none, and now the entire village knew that Shiki’s existed. She attempts to Attack Toshio but he’s protected by the large bar shop owner, Ookawa, and in the end Megumi’s Father takes his revenge for his daughter’s death.

In this moment the village takes up the fight. Toshio asks who will stand with him, and gives those who can’t stomach it the chance to leave. Only one man still attempts to talk him down, only to end up shot in the head accidently from a sniper bullet meant for Toshio. His son, stricken by sudden grief and anger would become the second major player on the Doctor’s side. Tamo would lead the forces to wipe out the Shiki hiding in the water ways, allowing Toshio and the rest to concentrate on the houses and the Mansion. They outnumbered the shiki, and stayed in groups, hiding their faces the first night with masks in order to protect the identity of their leader. The shiki could do nothing that first night of the onslaught and fell back without making any head way. The next night more where staked and burned, including many of those who had hid themselves away in the mansion. But they never found where Sunako was sleeping.

On the second night Toshio and his main guy’s, Ookawa, Tamo, and his friend Tashiro was surrounded and attacked by a large group of villagers who had their minds taken over from being bitten during the day by the two Jinrou’s, both of which later are killed by Natsuno before killing himself. Ookawa protects Toshio, but even with his shielding the knives manage to reach him, injuring him. Luckily the women of the town then come forward and take down all the controlled victims. Toshio patches everyone up, and finds out shortly later about his mother’s cruel demise. He doesn’t feel much of anything over her death, but tells the others to watch their own families in case they take retaliation against them as well. The Vampire who did this was Ookawa’s son who isn’t the smartest guy and is quickly found hiding from the sun in Toshio’s closet and is killed instantly.

Before long all the shiki have been destroyed except for Sunako who was hidden away with Seishin. Once again Toshio and gang go back to the Mansion to search it again, this time with the thought that perhaps there was a hidden basement. Before they even get to the door though, a car crashes through the gates, and this would be the last time he would see his Best friend, as they exchanged glances before he sped off into the distance. At the same time Toshio is told about a fire that threatened to engulf the village and he has to make a choice, to go after Seishin or leave it to Ookawa and the others and concentrate on the fire. He decides to send Ookawa, and rushes to try what he can and to organize the other villagers so that they can quickly get rid of the evidence.

Toshio never finds out what happens to them. The village ends burning down and takes care of the rest the bodies. He leaves along with the other survivors, driving away to the nearby city. From there they give a bogus story to the authorities and then scatter across the country or even to other lands.
Personality: Toshio was raised as the heir to the Ozaki name; a very powerful family due the fact that they own the Ozaki clinic and whose sons have always been the village doctor. It was unthinkable that anyone else would take their place, therefore as he grew up he would often times be pressured by both his parents and the village to meet their expectations as an heir to such a powerful title. Both of Toshio’s parents were very stern and proud over their heritage, basing their actions around money and the continuation of their respected status in society. They considered the blemishing of such reputation to be an unforgivable crime. But Toshio could care less about money or status. Although he would end up becoming a doctor like his fore father’s, he sought out to help people, rather than looking for prestige and recognition. When he left town to continue his education, he had no plans to ever go back to Sotoba. But he did, not because he sought out the comfort of home, not because he changed his mind on taking over the family name, but for the villagers.

He couldn’t stand the way his parents treated the people around them, as if they were servants. His father held no real care for his patient’s, seeing their lives as a matter of pride, rather than an act of kindness. Toshio found all of this to be ridiculous, that being famous in a small town was like a frog in a well. They weren’t doing anything to help human kind and this dislike for their ideals turned into hate. Such a hate that even after finding his mother’s mutilated corpse he just stares, his final thought for her being “This woman finally paid for her foolishness with her life”. She would be the only human killed by a shiki that doesn’t bring him some kind of anger for retribution or guilt for his inability to help.

His own feeling’s on the village is, difficult to understand. Similarly to his friend Seishin, he does harbor some resentment for their contribution in pushing Toshio towards becoming a doctor despite his own feelings on the matter. But this doesn’t seem to interfere with his good nature, he still cares about them, and is unable to sit back and just watch them suffer. But it should also be noted that he wasn’t the type of guy to stand back and let anyone suffer, he was a Doctor, and his main wish was to help people. After the first few deaths he vows to not rest until he finds out what’s killing the villagers and brings a stop to it. His father once said that the villager’s lives were on his shoulders and these where words he took seriously and carried on with him. Each death that takes place in the village strikes him hard, giving him feelings of guilt and resentment towards his own inability. At first he just becomes frustrated, having nothing and no one to lash out at. After a while, he even start’s to lash out at friends and unthinkably a patient’s family member. His nurses commit that he’s never done this before. But as seen in earlier cases, he will speak out against people who refuse to hospitalize family members because of blind pride; such was the case with an elderly lady whose husband was dying and refused to get him checked out because her husband was always so healthy normally.

But as much as he cares, he also resents them for their blindness and refusal to see what’s happening around them. This develops after he confesses his knowledge of the shiki to some of his friends in a diner. They brush him off, saying it was the curse of modern rationality. He can understand this. He, too, was once cursed with the same rationality; but, this was a town that was being invaded by the Shiki. They had already gained control of all the major institutions, making their takeover easier and wiping the reality of the situation from the rest of the world. They knew what was happening, could feel it around them. They hid from the night but seemed to fear learning the truth. And he hated it, how people would choose to remain oblivious rather than try to solve the problem, to take up arms and fight. And the only man who didn’t turn a blind eye, who he knew he could trust, who understood him and wished for the same freedom as he when they were growing up…had left him. He was alone, facing an enemy that was growing at a rapid rate and was more powerful than can be imagined, but that didn’t stop him, he still planned on killing them. Part of it was because he despised those blood sucking bastards, no doubt about that, but it was also because he wanted to save the village, save these blind people even as they turn their backs on him.

And when it comes to his best friend, Seishin…well he didn’t blame him. He understood all too well his feelings towards the village, and was not surprised to learn that he had entered an allegiance with the Shiki. At least he had made a decision, unlike the others. But he had no idea what to do if they would have to fight, and thankfully it would never come to that. But we do get some information from his friend about his personality in the past and how it’s carried over to present time. When he was a kid Toshio hated playing with the older kids, not wanting to be their underling or treated like a kohai, so he would end up playing mostly with a kid named Seishin and later on a child named Mikiyasu. Toshio was very outgoing and energetic, often times getting into trouble, and pretty much was completely different from the other two boys. Seishin was rather shy, and came from the family who ran the temple, so he was well behaved and well educated. His other friend, Mikiyasu, was a bit of a cry baby but was also good natured and very kind. And the rebellious child and the shy book worm would continue being best friends well into their adulthood, despite their parent’s feelings on the matter and their separate occupations. He would often run ideas off both Seishin and his staff, taking their points seriously and keeping them in mind.

But there was one thing that he could not forgive, and nothing anyone said would change his mind, and that was the eradication of the Shiki’s. He absolutely despised them, because they made him realize his inferiority, and made him feel helpless. But no matter how hopeless everything seemed he was beyond determined to stop them. This obsession would come after he realized that Shiki existed and his near win against them. A slight hope in this battle, a win for humanity, and for once he would be able to say he saved someone. He knew as soon as she went home things would get bad again, but he planned to act before that happened, using her memories of the incident to reveal to the villager’s the truth. But that night Tatsumi came into his clinic, and quickly defeated the doctor, and with all the shiki by his side he let the Doctor watch as they drained the poor old woman to death. This was a statement for him to back off, but it only fueled him further. What Tatsumi had failed to realize was the further he fell the stronger he became.

All it really meant was that he would need more information and be a lot more careful next time. And so he pushed back his morality and started digging up corpses, checking to see if they had come back to life. But none of the dead he knew had rose, so now he was getting desperate. So when his own Wife had been attacked, he decided this might be his last opportunity. He begged for her to rise, and when she died he would sneak around, becoming paranoid and feeling horror at what he was doing. It wasn’t horror towards letting his wife die, no, he had allowed that. He even watched as Tatsumi made his escape from her window, looking him in the eye. But he felt horror at the fact he was pretending she was alive, at deceiving his nurses, and at keeping a CORPSE in a place for the living. He was so caught up with his chaotic emotions he didn’t even register as one of his nurses came up to him with tears in her eye’s telling him another nurse had gone missing. He coldly said “is that so” and walked off. He didn’t mean to act so cold, regretting this action later, but perhaps being cold is what he needed for his next action.

Because he was about to torture the woman he married, who he had cared about. Sure their relationship wasn’t all rainbows and sunshine. She refused to move into the village with him but she came back when she heard he was getting overwhelmed. Their relationship was rather strained, but it always had been. She was more of a trophy wife, someone he married because she met his parent’s standards and he wanted to be the one to choose his own wife, someone who he could at least call a friend if not a lover. At least that’s what he told himself as Kyoko, his wife, did rise from the dead and he would proceed with his experiments. When she starts to burn from the sunlight he moves her, not wanting her to die before he can really experiment and figure anything out. He completely tries to separate this woman from his mind as he cuts her, injects her with a number of acidic and poisonous substances, and tortures her with religious artifacts that Shiki are terrified by. And in the end he will kill her with a steak through the heart. But during this time he still shows some concern, not wanting to hear her screams he covers her mouth, he calls her by her first name, and he tries to give her anesthetic before the injections and the eventual murder. And before any of this…he begs for her forgiveness, cradling her head in his hands and giving her a final farewell as the man she once knew, because now he would become a monster. Normally such things would sicken him, he wasn’t naturally a cruel man, but if it was for something he believed was right he would go to no ends to achieve his means.

For only a monster could fight these things. This would be his justice, his final decision.

Growing up surrounded by expectation and having no freedom in choosing his own future, he clings desperately onto what little he is given a choice over, and extends this to the people around him. He hate’s Sunako and the shiki not because they kill, but because their reasons are selfish and they take away the choice to fight from the humans. He hates the villagers because they refuse to make a decision and tries to ignore the situation. He is fine with Seishin’s decision to join up with the Shiki’s because it was his choice. He lectures himself over ordering a patient to visit him in the clinic, saying doctors should never order patients to get help, and he never forces anyone to stay in the clinic, even though half the time it’s because they’re under the Shiki’s control. He will always fight, he hates authority and grew up rebellious, as indicated by the way he refuses to wear a suit and continues to smoke. He is still just as outgoing and energetic as he was in youth, and just as accepting of people no matter who they are or how strange they seem. He can easily switch personalities, or hide his true intentions, and can be rather charming when he wants to be. He is desensitized by death, as he has to be when you’re a doctor. As long as he has control over the situation he is a very good guy and a joy to be around. But when this control is taken from him he will fight tooth and nail to even the playing field.
Powers & Abilities:
Fears, Weaknesses:

Samples
YOU CANNOT USE SAMPLES FROM D_M OR D_P.
Samples can be linked from the TDM.
Network Sample: This sample can be linked.
